About Netball

Netball was originally created in the 1890s as an alternative to Basketball, invented by a Canadian physical education teacher working in Massachusetts, United States. Despite this, the sport is still relatively up and coming in North America.

It's a different story in the rest of the world though - netball is the most commonly played team sport by females globally, with over 20 million players across 70 countries worldwide.

Netball started to become popular with male players in the 1980s and we are proud to be one of the top Mixed Clubs in North America!

There are a number of differences that netball has to basketball, including:

  • no backboard, so shooters need to have a lot of accuracy

  • no dribbling and a 3 second limit to holding on to the ball,

    •  so there's lots of passing making it a real team sport

  • 7 players instead of 5

  • players are restricted to certain zones on the court, adding an extra degree of tactical awareness required

  • netball is non-contact, meaning players of all levels of experience and physique are able to compete at the same level
